Pick up a mason jar. Hold it up to the light. It is, at this moment, nothing — a vessel waiting for a decision. By the end of this post it will be the center of an athanor, the alchemist’s slow-heating furnace, rebuilt for a kitchen counter in the twenty-first century. Paracelsus worked with bellows and clay. You will work with grain alcohol and cheesecloth. The principle is identical: create the conditions under which matter surrenders its hidden nature.
The word athanor comes from the Arabic al-tannur, a domed bread oven designed to hold heat without tending. The alchemist’s version was self-feeding, packed with smoldering fuel, meant to maintain a slow, patient warmth for days or weeks. It was not a dramatic furnace. It was a waiting furnace. Your kitchen, with its steady room temperature and its dark cupboards, performs exactly that function for a cold-process spagyric tincture. You do not need a laboratory. You need to know what you are doing with the equipment you already own, and you need to know what to skip.
What follows is an equipment list built on the actual operations of spagyric work — extraction, separation, calcination, cohobation — not on the fantasy version. Nothing here is precious or expensive. Most of it you own already. A few items need to be sourced deliberately. One operation requires real caution and a straight conversation about fire.
The Vessel: Jars, Glass, and What They Must Do
Wide-mouth mason jars. That is the beginning and, for extraction, nearly the whole story. The wide mouth matters: you are packing plant matter by hand, pressing it down, checking its color over days and weeks. A narrow neck fights you at every step. Buy quarts. Buy half-gallons for larger batches. The brand is irrelevant; what matters is that the glass is intact, the lid seals, and you can see through the walls without distortion. Ball and Kerr have been making these since the 1880s. They are not romantic, but they are honest.
Use amber or dark glass only for the finished product — the decanted, filtered tincture that will sit on a shelf for months. During maceration you actually want clear glass so you can watch the extraction progress: the color pulling out of the herb, the gradient shifting from pale to deep, the slow thickening at the bottom of the jar where resins settle. This is information. Denying yourself the view by keeping everything in amber during maceration is a mistake born of the supplement-bottle aesthetic, not from tradition.
For amber storage bottles, source 1 oz and 2 oz dropper bottles with glass pipettes. Plastic pipettes degrade in high-proof alcohol. They introduce something you did not put in, which defeats the entire point of careful work. Inspect every bottle before you fill it. Rinse with a small amount of your menstruum — the solvent — before the first use.
The Menstruum: High-Proof Spirits and Why Proof Matters
Vegetable menstruum. That is what the old texts called alcohol — the liquid medium that carries the extraction, the substance that dissolves and holds. Jean Beguin, writing his Tyrocinium Chymicum in 1610, was already specifying spirit strengths for different plant constituents. The principle has not changed: different molecules in a plant require different solvent polarities to release.
Water dissolves polysaccharides, mucilages, tannins, and mineral salts. Alcohol dissolves resins, essential oils, alkaloids, and many glycosides. A mixture of the two — which is what any spirit below 190 proof actually is — pulls a broader spectrum. This is why spagyric tinctures are not single-polarity extractions. They are intentional negotiations between water and alcohol, and the ratio is a craft decision, not a default.
For most work, 190-proof food-grade ethanol cut to working strength is the professional choice. In the United States, Everclear at 151 proof (75.5% ABV) is the most accessible option in states where 190-proof is restricted. Do not use isopropyl alcohol. Do not use denatured alcohol. Do not use vodka for anything where precision matters — its 40% ABV (80 proof) is adequate only for light, water-soluble constituents. A kitchen scale and a reliable dilution table will let you hit any target percentage you need from a high-proof starting spirit.
Filtration: Cheesecloth, Funnels, and Patience
Filtration is where most beginners destroy their own work by rushing. You press too hard, you force fine plant particles through the cloth, you end up with a cloudy tincture full of suspended solids that will ferment or go rancid in the bottle. The solution is layering and time.
Use two or three layers of fine-weave cheesecloth as the first pass. Set a wide-mouth funnel over a clean receiving jar, drape the cheesecloth in it, pour slowly. Walk away. Let gravity do the work for at least twenty minutes before you consider pressing the marc — the spent plant matter — gently with the back of a spoon. If you want a cleaner final product, follow the cheesecloth pass with an unbleached coffee filter in the same funnel setup. This second pass takes longer. An hour is not unusual for a resinous herb. This is not a problem. Rushing filtration is the single most common technique failure in home tincture work.
For funnels: stainless steel or borosilicate glass. Both are inert to high-proof alcohol. Plastic funnels — particularly polypropylene — will not catastrophically fail, but they are a variable you do not need to introduce. The tools should be chemically neutral. That is not aesthetics; it is methodology.
Calcination: The Salt, the Crucible, and the Fire
This is the operation that separates spagyric work from ordinary herbal tincture-making, and it is the one that requires you to read carefully and think before you act. Calcination is the burning of the spent marc — after extraction — to a white or gray ash, which is then purified and returned to the tincture. This ash is the Salt principle of classical spagyrics: the mineral body of the plant, the third of the tria prima that Paracelsus articulated in the early sixteenth century alongside Sulfur (the oil/aromatic) and Mercury (the water/alcohol). The cohobation — reuniting all three — is the completion of the work.
For equipment: a stainless steel pan or a small ceramic crucible. Cast iron is not suitable; it contributes iron to the ash. Pyrex glass can shatter under direct flame. Stainless or ceramic are your options. Work outdoors or with a powerful range hood and an open window. Burning plant matter produces real smoke. Some plant families — particularly those with naturally occurring alkaloids or pyrrolizidine compounds, such as comfrey — should not be worked with by beginners at all without serious prior study. This is not a general caution; it is a specific one. Know your plant before you burn it.
The process: spread dried marc in the pan in a thin layer. Apply low, patient heat. Stir with a stainless steel spatula. You are driving off carbon over time — moving from black char toward pale gray ash. This takes longer than you expect, often thirty to sixty minutes. Do not rush with high heat; you are not incinerating, you are calcining. Keep a lid nearby and a bowl of water on the counter. Alcohol is not involved in this step — you are working with dry material only — but open flame and hot metal demand basic fire discipline regardless.
Once cooled, dissolve the ash in a small amount of distilled water, filter through the coffee-filter setup to remove any remaining carbon or insoluble grit, and evaporate back down on low heat until you have a dry, purified salt. This is the material you return to the tincture.
Labels, Notebooks, and What You Must Write Down
Label everything at the moment of creation, not later. Later does not exist in practice. What exists is a row of amber bottles that you are absolutely certain you can identify by memory until the day you cannot. Write the plant name (common and Latin binomial), the plant part used, the solvent percentage, the date of maceration start, the date of decant, and the lot number if you are making more than one batch at a time. Waterproof labels and a permanent marker cost almost nothing and prevent the specific frustration of finding an unlabeled brown bottle six months after the fact.
Keep a paper notebook. A dedicated laboratory notebook, not a notes app. The act of handwriting slows your observation down, which improves it. Record what the marc smelled like before and after maceration. Record the color of the tincture at day three versus day fourteen. Record the yield weight. This is not bureaucracy; it is the construction of a personal tradition. The alchemists who left us anything useful left it because they wrote it down. Jan Baptist van Helmont, Robert Boyle, the compilers of the Pharmacopoeia Londinensis — these were people who documented obsessively. Their obsession is why we have anything to build on at all.
A final note on what to skip: dedicated rotary evaporators, reflux condensers, fractional distillation columns. These are real tools with real applications, and if you eventually move toward essential oil distillation or alcohol recovery at scale, you will want them. But they are not the beginning. The beginning is a jar, a spirit, a plant, and the willingness to pay attention over time. The athanor does not require drama. It requires heat, and patience, and the understanding that you are not decorating your kitchen. You are learning a practice that ran continuously from the Islamic Golden Age through the European Renaissance and never, despite what the pharmaceutical century tried to do to it, actually stopped.
